Being A Leader… Is It Worth It?

I talk about leadership quite a bit and I can get pretty excited about the possibility. Sometimes (even for me) I think…is all this extra effort and commitment worth it?

Wouldn’t it be easier to just be a loving human being and follow the “good” leaders?

Well, as good as that sounds…here are some of the great benefits to being a leader!

Frontrunner, trailblazer, groundbreaker, leading light…these are some of the synonyms you will find in the thesaurus for leader. What do all of these have in common?

Leaders lead. They don’t wait for someone else’s approval, authority, ok, or permission. Imagine John F. Kennedy looking behind him and asking if it “would it be ok if the US sent a man to the moon?”

Leaders don’t wait for the evidence to appear before they commit or take a stand. They live in the future as if it already exists and ENROLL others in that future vision.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said “I have been to the mountain top”. He was already in a free and equal nation as he spoke those words.

Leaders stand alone at times. Leadership by its very definition means being bold and standing alone as you begin to enroll others around you in a new possibility. A leader believes in the bigger vision and is willing to stand in the current condition (which may be uncomfortable) in order to make a difference.

Leaders have other people believe they can be leaders too! This is not a solo game, even if at times the leader feels solitary. Leaders find ways for all people to lead, to engage, and to make a difference!

Leaders do not sell out to discomfort or pressure to conform. This one is tough…especially if you have people in your life with whom you worry about what they think of you. Leaders are so clear about what they are up to…they can sustain judgement and rejection.

Why lead you say? One, because you are a unique contribution and if you don’t share your unique contribution it will be lost.

Two, because your voice and vote matter and your energy on this planet is either contributing to the whole or taking away. There is no neutral place to stand, we are giving or taking!

Three, because we cannot depend on the leadership in our family, community, country or world to get the job done, no matter how good a job they are doing. We are in this together and it will take all of us to transform our community and our world.

Four, you will feel better about yourself and you will inspire others to risk.

Where are you leading in your life…truly leading? Where are you not leading and want to? Please name that area and write down what are the ways you could lead. How would you show up in those areas? What distinct actions would you take? What is the bigger vision that you would enroll others in?

The WorldWorks Leadership Practice (our third level transformational environment) is designed for you to create a deep experience of being a leader and authentically standing for a vision bigger than yourself. You will see undeniable evidence of your stand manifesting around your in your relationships, career, health, finances and contribution to others.

Being a leader…is it worth it! YES!
